Paper Plate GSM Explained: Choosing Between 320, 340, 390 and 400

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It is the weight of one square metre of the paper used to form the plate. Higher GSM means more material, a firmer base and better resistance to moisture and oil.

Why GSM matters more than appearance

Two plates can look identical and behave very differently. The one made from heavier paper keeps its shape when a customer carries a full plate in one hand. The lighter one folds. For caterers and canteens, that difference decides whether the plate is fit for the job.

The practical range

Our corrugation paper plates are manufactured in 320, 340, 390 and 400 GSM.

  • 320 GSM — dry snacks, sweets, light service where plates are set on a table.
  • 340 GSM — general purpose catering, mixed menus, moderate gravy content.
  • 390 GSM — heavy meal service, standing buffets, plates carried by hand.
  • 400 GSM — the firmest option for full thali service and heavy gravy dishes.

Silver bowls are manufactured in 140 and 180 GSM, since the bowl form itself carries the load rather than a flat base.

GSM and cost

Higher GSM uses more raw material, so it costs more per piece. The right decision is the lowest GSM that holds your menu without failing. Buying too light to save money creates complaints; buying heavier than needed spends money on strength nobody uses.

How to test before you standardise

Load a sample plate with your actual heaviest dish, hold it from one edge and wait two minutes. If the rim stays level, the GSM is right for the menu.
